Children may be on site for several reasons:

  • Attending as a customer.
  • Accompanying or visiting their parents.
  • Visiting as part of a school group.

A risk assessment must be undertaken regarding children on site and where relevant, risks to a child if they stray or if a situation arises where they are not under immediate adult supervision.

The risk assessment and processes should include:

  • Clear safety rules that everyone knows to follow upon entry of children into the workplace and their access to parts of it.
  • A means of communicating the rules to all at the workplace, including supervisors, employees, and visitors.
  • A system to ensure the rules are followed. E.g., using high level supervision and/or preventing or restricting access to certain areas.
  • Instructions to employees on safe work procedures when there may be children present.
  • Instructions to parents and guardians on necessary supervision of children to ensure safety at the workplace.
