Frequently Asked Questions

Why is WARRRL introducing small format Self-serve Kiosks into the network?

The smaller format Self-serve Kiosks have been introduced as part of our strategic plan as the business continues towards our goal of 85 per cent redemption.

The small format Kiosks are located inside shopping centre precincts to improve access, convenience, and increase brand awareness. The smaller format is designed to capture smaller volumes of 10¢ containers that often go unreturned and disposed of in general waste bins in busy commercial locations, as well as attract new customers who have not previously participated in Containers for Change.

Where will the small format Kiosks be located?

The trial will include four Self-serve Kiosks. The only location currently finalised is:

  • Marketlane Subi, 44 Station Street, Subiaco

The remaining three locations will be communicated to you once they are confirmed.

Why are small format Kiosks being introduced on a trial basis?

WARRRL is committed to innovation and we want to make sure that we are using the best technology on the market, so our offerings are easy for Western Australians to use and address our biggest barriers to participation, access, and convenience.

Improving access and convenience means more to us than just proximity. We’re also testing multilingual language options and other accessibility features in the hope of improving our inclusivity and drawing more Western Australians to the Scheme.

Will these locations still be available after the trial?

Yes, the small format Kiosks will remain in place unless the trial determines the location or technology are not the right fit.

Where will you expand if the trial is successful?

Future locations will be chosen based on population insights, trends, and distance to existing refund points.

Why are there no regional small format Kiosks?

The small format Kiosks are currently in a trial phase and are being tested in Perth due to its proximity to WARRRL’s head office. This allows us to monitor performance closely, address any issues quickly, and gather feedback before expanding. Regional locations will be considered after the trial is complete and the insights gained have been assessed to determine the best approach for a wider roll out across the network. We want to ensure the Scheme meets the needs of Western Australians and our Refund Point Operators across all of WA.

What are the opening hours of the small format Self-serve Kiosks?

The small format Kiosks are located inside shopping centres and are accessible during the centres’ opening hours.

How will these small format Kiosks impact my refund point?

From our research, we know that 31% of users of the existing Self-serve Kiosks are new to Containers for Change. The smaller format is designed to target people returning containers in smaller quantities while out and about, attracting new participants to the Scheme in busy commercial locations, and capturing containers that would otherwise be disposed of in general waste bins. They are an out of home solution aiming to reduce barriers to participation, without impacting the volumes returned to refund points.

Who are the Refund Point Operators that will be servicing the planned small format Kiosks?

The servicing refund point partners are selected base on location and knowledge of the technology. Return-It will be servicing our Subiaco Kiosk because of their knowledge and experience with the trial machine. The refund points that service each Kiosk will be chosen on a case-by-case basis.

How are the small format Kiosks different from existing Self-serve Kiosks?

The small format Kiosks are much smaller than the existing Self-serve Kiosks found in shopping centre car parks and are slightly larger than a vending machine. They accept all eligible containers through a single chute, so customers don’t need to separate their containers by material type when making a return.

The small format is also cashless, just like the existing Kiosks. Customers can scan their member number to receive their refund straight to a nominated bank account, or they can opt for a refund voucher to redeem at the Kiosks’ retail partner. Small format Kiosks also give customers the option to donate their refund to a number of prefilled local causes selected by the shopping centre partner and servicing refund point.

How are the local causes, charities, or community groups selected as donation options in the Kiosks?

Each small format Kiosk is programmed with donation options for local causes, charities, or community groups. These are chosen by the shopping centre partner and servicing refund point. The options will be adjusted periodically to ensure they remain relevant and align with community interests.
